The ELS General English program gives you the opportunity to improve your English by focusing on the skills you will need to communicate well in everyday business and social settings. The four morning classes focus on the listening, speaking, reading and writing skills necessary to communicate effectively in English. The two afternoon Skills Enhancement Classes let you apply what you learn in the morning in a communicative and natural context. You have the opportunity to learn more about American culture, improve your vocabulary and use of idioms and conduct meaningful and productive conversations.

College Class Visits and Auditing
ELS Intensive students (in key levels) can visit one or more college classes, depending on professor approval.

Scholarships/Discounts
After completion of the full ELS Intensive English Program qualified students may receive credit for ELS and/or tuition discounts at select host universities and colleges, once they matriculate.

Concurrent Enrollment at Host College
ELS students who have received conditional acceptance from the host college/university may have the chance to attend one or more individual college courses (for credit) while still studying in the Intensive English Program.



Off-Campus Student Residence

Shared rooms in 2-bedroom off-campus Park Place apartments adjacent to the IUPUI campus. Shared bathrooms (2 per apartment). Each apartment has a furnished kitchen, living room, dining room and walk-in closets. Rooms include telephone, microwave, TV with cable, bed mattress pad and decorative comforter. A free shuttle transports students to and from ELS.

Homestay

All ELS Centers offer homestay accommodations with an English-speaking host family. ELS host families are carefully screened to ensure they provide a pleasant and safe “home away from home” for our students. Living with a host family can help you learn English faster while experiencing American customs and culture firsthand. Students often develop very close relationships with their hosts — friendships that can last a lifetime. Students have their own room and are responsible for their personal transportation.

Center Staff

Kim Bassler
Center Director: Kim is a native of Indiana. She has worked for ELS Language Centers in Indianapolis for over eighteen years. Kim studied Education at Indiana University and began teaching English at ELS Language Center shortly thereafter. She also has traveled and studied in other parts of the world. “I enjoy traveling to a new place, meeting new people and learning about other cultures. The best part of my job is that now I can do all of that right here at ELS!” Kim welcomes international students with Hoosier hospitality to cultural and sporting activities taking place in downtown Indianapolis. ELS in Indianapolis is located on the campus of IUPUI, and Kim is happy to talk with you about their 200 undergraduate, graduate, and PhD degree programs.

Jeremy Mast
Academic Director: Jeremy is also from Indiana. After completing a degree in English literature at Indiana University in Bloomington, Jeremy went on to get his master’s degree in TESOL/Applied Linguistics, also at IU. Since then, he has taught English in Ecuador, at Indiana State University, and in Chile. While in Chile, he was also the coordinator of a project called The American Corner. Now at ELS, Jeremy schedules the students in classes, monitors the testing, and oversees the teaching staff at our Center.

Janeth Vieira
Registrar: Janeth is from Colombia. She is an Attorney in Law in her home country and worked for the State Auditor. She has worked as a bookkeeper in Miami and she has assisted Spanish speakers with tax documents since moving from Florida to Indianapolis. Janeth manages student tuition, housing payments and bill paying. Janeth enjoys getting to know everyone.

Joshua Simpson
International Student Advisor: Joshua is recent transplant to Indiana – he originally hails from Chicago. During his tenure as a student at Valparaiso University, he spent a year working for the University of Reutlingen in Germany. Shortly after graduating with his B.A., he returned to Europe for some rest and relaxation until he decided to move to Indianapolis. As the current ISA, he enjoys fielding questions from students about everything from immigration issues to questions about apartment around campus to which sports teams to root for. Always a glutton for knowledge, Josh particularly enjoys hearing the vast array of languages, and one day hopes to learn them all.
